The concept for Chief Studio was born in late 2017 when its founder Zoe Ellis was living and working in New York. The name was the first thing that was decided on and set the tone for what was to come.

Chief Studio was inspired by the strength of Zoe's grandmother, a leader of her community in the small island nation of Rarotonga. Zoe set out to craft a label that placed equal value on sustainability and self-expression.

Chief Studio launched a year later in Sydney, Australia, exactly how it had been originally imagined; vibrant, luxurious and above all else - sustainably made. Each piece has been crafted to embolden the wearer to be dauntless, to be doubtless, to be a Chief. Taking direct inspiration from the strong women who paved the way, Chief Studio encapsulates a nostalgic, romantic and upbeat mood. It distils the perfection of your mother’s wardrobe in old photographs and reforms the silhouettes for the modern era in rich, natural fibres.

Each piece is designed to capture the energetic spirit of the modern female with printed separates which can be mixed, matched and layered, creating a capsule wardrobe for the ethically-minded maximalist.

Put simply, sustainability is about sustaining. It’s about ensuring that we meet our needs for today, without compromising the future generations' ability to meet theirs. It’s easiest to think about it as ‘How does it affect us now and how does it affect us in the future?’.

Chief Studio's organic fabrics are printed with the latest technology and a completely waterless process because Chief Studio thoughtfully considers its impact.

Organic cotton is cotton that is grown without any nasties like pesticides and doesn't contain common toxins like formaldehyde. The organic cotton Chief Studio use for manufacturing is GOTS certified which stands for Global Organic Textile Standard, an industry group that only grants their seal of approval to products that adhere to strict ecological and social criteria.

‘Lenzing modal’ is created by an Austrian company who developed the fibre from Beech trees. Products certified under the Lenzing trademark come from forests which adhere to strict forestry codes and Lenzing is dedicated to ensuring all their business practices, right down to the way they sustainably power their factory. Modal is completely biodegradable and requires fewer resources to farm than most fibres.

All off Chief Studio's printed fabrics are created using Kornit’s revolutionary digital printing technology. It’s quite straight forward; no water is used in the printing process which means there is no pre-treatment, washing or steaming required. The inks Chief Studio use are water-based and 100% free of heavy metals, formaldehyde and APE, so they're also non-hazardous, non-toxic and biodegradable.

Chief Studio don’t make just ‘stuff’, they make clothes that you will love and last you a lifetime. They do this through conscious design, so you can get multiple outfits out of the one piece They hope that this helps to kill that craving for something new because, at the end of the day, the most sustainable thing you can do is buy less, but buy better.

Chief Studio's factory in India is family owned and SA 8000 certified. What does this mean? It means that their factory is seriously committed to producing in a socially responsible way. SA 8000 is an independent body that enforces a zero-tolerance policy towards child labour, forced labour and inhumane treatment. They certify that workers are paid a living wage and work regular hours. Chief Studio also source their t-shirts and totes from Freeset, a fantastic organisation that helps to free women from the sex trafficking industry and provide ongoing support, shelter and job training to women within their program. Chief Studio's t-shirts and totes come in the most luxurious organic cotton and are embroidered locally in Sydney.
