The Australian label Why Mary was established on the Gold Coast by owner and designer, Janette Laver. Why Mary is known for its fusion of artistic fabric choice and casual easy wear style. Signature designs include minimal silhouettes which are complemented by bold digital prints, giving the brand a creative essence and an edge of unique individuality.
Inspired by the beauty and continuous change in nature, Why Mary’s designs often include photography or art as a media for fabric production. Quality and attention to detail are important aspects of the manufacturing process as well as the reduction of waste and recycling materials where possible. Why Mary manufactures locally and supports local printing companies and Australian suppliers in production.
Janette studied Fashion Design at the Gold Coast TAFE college and commenced a client-based dressmaking business while raising her daughter, further developing her understanding of fabrics, pattern making and assembly. In 2014, Why Mary launched a small collection showcasing unique designs followed by seasonal collections pushing the boundaries against mainstream mass-produced fashion. The brand continues to grow steadily gaining support from both local and interstate stockists, industry organisations and customers.
Why Mary's designs are proudly Australian made and the brand’s vision is to create a bold, artistic presence on the fashion landscape.

Currently, unused fabrics and offcuts are stored for future use. Recycling of paper, plastics and other materials have been a long-time domestic and commercial practice.
