If you've been following The Fashion Advocate and my sustainable living journey for a while now, you'll know that I'm anti-bleach and anti-toxins in my home. Bleach is a nasty chemical and besides the horrible smell of it, I'm also not a fan of what it does to the body. Stay with me while I give you a crash course on the science of bleach...
Bleach is a corrosive chemical and studies have shown that when bleach is mixed with citrus compounds like most household cleaners are, it becomes even more toxic. When bleach makes its way into our lungs like it does if you're using a spray bottle, those tiny chemical particles can cause short and long-term damage.
Long-term exposure to bleach also causes asthma. You read that correctly - it doesn't just make asthma worse or trigger asthma attacks, it can also cause asthma. Then there's the impact of bleach on marine life, because everything we use in our homes and wash down our drains, eventually ends up in our oceans.
And yet somehow, despite being so terrible for your overall health, your skin, your heart, your lungs, your liver and the environment, these cancer-causing chemical concoctions are available to buy off the shelves for home use.
If you're new to The Fashion Advocate and my sustainable living journey, now you know why I'm so anti-bleach and anti-toxins in my home. So, how do I keep it squeaky clean if I don't use bleach? I use natural, bleach-free cleaning products like Cove.
Cove's Starter Kit is the perfect foray into natural home cleaning products and before you question 'if natural products actually work', I can confirm they do. I'm a big fan of their Dish Tabs, but their Starter Kit is a great way to cleanse your home from nasty chemicals and make the switch to plant-based safer cleaning products in one easy move.
It includes reusable aluminium bottles, refill pouches and cleaning cloths to get you cleaning sustainably in every room of the house. Cove's powerful plant-based formulas are made with 100% natural fragrances, they're non-toxic, they're harsh-chemical free, they're septic safe, grey water safe, vegan and cruelty-free.
Cove's refill pouches are also hyper-concentrated so each time you refill your reusable Cove cleaning bottles, you'll use 80% less plastic compared to buying a new plastic cleaning bottle. Cove's refill pouches can be recycled through the REDcycle system too, and they are actually recycled, not landfilled.
Since Cove's launch, they've already saved over 120,000kg of single-use plastic and because aluminium is infinitely recyclable, their bottles really are eco-friendly. The entire Cove range is also made locally in Victoria, Australia and in a solar-powered facility.
If you're going to ditch bleach and make the switch to natural home cleaning products - and I strongly encourage you to - Cove has every surface of the house covered.
