Melbourne Cup attracts nearly 100,000 people to Flemington every single year, and it’s famed for its star-studded guest list. It’s also the second most influential fashion event when it comes to trends, forecasts and the season’s style highlights.

Fashions on the Field may be the official stage for the art of millinery and fine dressing, but it’s from within The Birdcage and amidst The Park that the most unique outfits can be found.

This year’s trend was colour-blocked red; Lindy Klim, Jennifer Hawkins, DJ Havana Brown and Bec Hewitt donned the dominant colour, while metallic tones and lace details followed closely behind as blogger and influencer favourites.

Boater hats and bigger brims were a-plenty, and every second clutch was a signature Olga Berg. Block heels and closed-toe pumps were matched with statement earrings and oversized jewels, and natural, fresh and wavy beauty looks made way for the primary colours at hand.

Previously forbidden at Flemington, jumpsuits were a popular choice for both fashion elite and general racegoers alike, with full-length flares and plunging necklines the key.

Dusting off their 3-piece suits, gents chose checks over plain colours, contrasting their pocket squares against their ties to highlight polka dots and florals in the men’s arena, and vintage-inspired statement sunglasses were the must-have men’s accessory this year.
