Designer Sophia Martin’s background reads like every fashionista’s dream; interning for the likes of Lover, Mary Katrantzou and The Row, she’s found her own name in fashion learning from the best and living in London and New York. Now based in Melbourne, Sophia uses her self-titled label to experiment with deconstruction and tailoring, channeling her designs as a form of expression, communication and innovation. Balancing traditional quality craftsmanship with a contemporary design aesthetic, Sophia uses her label as a catalyst to explore the broader socio, political and economic context of fashion. The inspiration behind Sophia Martin’s latest collection ‘Intelligence of Touch’ is communicated through film, and the collaboration with STEASH Films explores the importance of the senses. Focusing on a heightened sense of touch, the film depicts a juxtaposition of structure and drape fabrications, derived from the central themes of the collection. The sense of touch is prominently featured in the vignette structure, transforming with every scene to suggest a sensual, intimate, assertive and independent facade. The narrative follows a dynamic shift of power between the featured couple, and the detailed elements of each garment are emphasized to elaborate their appeal to the textural sense.Shot in an abandoned industrial area of Port Melbourne, the film fades from scene to scene, subtly but powerfully capturing texture and touch on film; delicate decorations in braille writing, asymmetric cuts and sophisticated knots are intimately featured. A gentle breeze withers silk against the thigh, strong backlighting bounces off a crisp collar, shadows fall down the backs of structured leather coats and soft hands scrunch and crumble pressed cottons… The film successfully communicates the sense of touch and the feeling of fabric against the body. With the definitive talents of STEASH Films behind the piece, who have produced work for the likes of RMIT University, Vexxd Magazine, Noelia Bolger and Fred Hates Fashion, it’s a captivating take on the Sophia Martin label.Watch the full film or shop the latest from Sophia Martin via The Dress Collective. The Fashion Advocate x
