The Scandinavian concept of 'hygge' is one of ultimate comfort, warmth and cosiness, and it can be likened to the feeling of slipping into a warm bath or snuggling into a feather bed with a hot mug of natural goodness.
Ginger & Co were borne of this simple ritual, and their superfood latte mixes have warmed many a pair of cold hands since launching their Australian made blends in 2017.
They're passionate about cooking up good vibes while doing their part to support the wider community, so they source their natural and premium quality ginger, matcha and turmeric from local farmers. We share these local and community values, which is why we partnered with Ginger & Co for The Fashion Advocate's 2019 IDENTITY runway, and they popped a little bit of hygge in our VIP bags.
Co-founder Visayon Viravong stepped away from the cauldron to break bread on Ginger & Co's 100% organic, natural and superfood offering...
Let’s start at the beginning. What has the business journey been like for Ginger & Co?
We started from a very humble beginning in our own kitchen and in just a little over a year, we have matured so much as a business. The journey has been incredible, but there's been a lot of hard work, sweat, and tears to get to where we are now. The health-food industry is a crowded space, and we are very proud to have been able to find our niche by using Australian-grown superfoods in our product offering. We also have some big and exciting plans for 2019, so stay tuned!
Why do you use 100% natural and organic ingredients?
Ever since the advent of mass-manufacturing, food has become highly refined and processed. As a result, we are eating food that is lower in nutritional value and enhanced with unhealthy (and sometimes dangerous) preservatives and additives. Our mission is to bring people back to what previous generations were eating – wholesome, natural and minimally-processed food that is full of nutrition, and without all the bad stuff. We wanted to create something delicious from superfood ingredients to help people get back to basics.
You list three main superfoods on your website – ginger, turmeric and matcha. Why have you chosen to work with these three in particular?
There were several reasons for this. First and foremost, we only use superfoods that have been scientifically verified. Ginger, turmeric, and matcha have been extensively studied, with many of their benefits verified through credible clinical studies. Secondly, these superfoods taste amazing and they are a perfect way to get people on board the superfood train. Lastly, especially for ginger and turmeric, they are grown right here in Australia, and this aligns with our philosophy of using locally-grown ingredients where possible.
Why is it so important for you to work with Australian-grown ingredients?
First and foremost, we want to support our local farmers and growers. There's a sense of pride and joy, and we can say that we use ingredients that are grown in our very own backyard. Secondly, when you use imported ingredients, you're in the dark about how they have been processed, their quality, and how long they have been sitting in the warehouse. There is always that unknown risk with imported products, but locally-grown ingredients are always fresher. Our Queensland-grown turmeric and ginger are almost always freshly milled when we order them. You can tell the difference between a ‘fresh’ spice and one that has been sitting in a sack for a long time. At the moment we procure all of our turmeric, ginger, black tea, green tea, and strawberries direct from local farms.
Why do you think it’s important to slow down and our health and wellbeing first in a world where everything is so fast-paced?
We think that the fast-paced lifestyle, together with the perception that it takes great efforts to eat and drink healthy, are putting people off switching to a healthier lifestyle. The fact is, the latter is not true at all. This is what we are trying to prove – that superfoods can taste delicious and can be very simple to prepare and incorporate into a daily routine. For instance, our latte mixes are as easy to make as a cup of coffee and can also be easily mixed into a bowl of breakfast cereal. If people can realise this, then we hope they will be more willing to switch to healthier alternatives, without that fear of sacrificing their precious time or daily routine.
