Sunday Social arrives from Brisbane

Traveling from Fortitude Valley to Fitzroy, the Sunday Social store has answered to its begging southern supporters and popped up in Melbourne, opening at 122 Gertrude Street.

Well known as a Brisbane staple, Sunday Social has grown from strength to strength over the past five years. Now the best destination for 90s vibes, double denim and vintage treasures, the store also sells its own label and has a loyal following of nearly seven thousand fans on Instagram.

Melbourne architect, Murray Barker, is responsible for the Fitzroy pop-up’s interior, which is every bit as enticing as its contents are desirable, and his crisp and minimal touch has created the perfect canvas for Sunday Social’s garb.

Revealing the pop-up on Thursday 14th January, owner Jess Bartly joined her fans, and with an Asahi in hand and no shortage of wares to drool over, I found a handful of new wardrobe necessities to covet. Drake’s “started at the bottom now we here” chimed in my mind as I reflected on Sunday Social’s humble beginnings as a laneway pop-up in Brisbane, but it’s now no surprise that Jess has bought the store to Melbourne. Catering to the female population with plaid pants, linen jumpsuits and knit vests, all with an almost-Japanese style, the Sunday Social look is one that fits right in with the Melbourne fashion scene.

Although the store’s palette is predominantly monochromatic, Sunday Social’s unique and peculiar range of accessories are head turners; out-there earrings, velour headbands and vivid scrunchies are just some of the nostalgic adornments available. A delicious pair of pin earrings with both matte and shiny facets caught my keen eye in particular, but I could have traipsed home with the entire range, which, besides it’s distinctive and affordable qualities, is easily fallen in love with.

It’s exciting to see unique labels and interstate stores test the waters in Melbourne, and for Sunday Social, it’s the perfect pool.
