Pink lakes, pastel sneakers and the impact of microbial bacteria

Australia's pink lakes make for a perfect backdrop, especially when pastel pink sneakers are in the picture. It’s not every day you’d travel to this location for a shoot though; Dimboola’s Pink Lake lies 344km west of Melbourne, and unless you’re looking for it, you’d completely miss it on the Western Highway.

It’s in the middle of nowhere, and it’s pink – a little bit of a phenomenon considering the vast majority of Australia is desolate desert. Salt-loving microbes in the water produce carotenoids which create the milky colour, and depending on the weather, Dimboola’s Pink Lake can range in hue from dusky pink to vermillion. As water evaporates from the saltwater lake, its salinity increases to nearly ten times that of the ocean, creating an extreme habitat where few organisms can live, and – a Red Rock Deli dream amount of pink salt.

I couldn’t resist taking a few snaps of my Frankie4 sneakers walking on Dimboola’s natural beauty.
