Todd is an industry king pin when it comes to hair.
The Fashion Advocate: You’ve just opened a new store at the Gasworks, but VN has been around for over 30 years in Brisbane. Can you share a bit about your history as a salon?
VN: Todd Arndt and Jim Skordou, Directors of Vogue National and VN Hairdressing, have been creating beautiful hair in the heart of Brisbane’s CBD for 35 years. They have branched out and opened a diffusion salon at Gasworks Plaza in Newstead. Vogue Nationale is a multi-award winning salon that has produced some of Australia’s finest and most sort-after stylists, including Australian Hairdresser of the Year; Australian Colour Technician of the Year; New Creative Force and Best New Salon Design. The Vogue Nationale team have a strong presence in Paris and New York Fashion Week and play a major part in Australian Fashion Week. The Vogue Nationale team are industry education leaders, presenting regular workshops for La Biosthethique, nationally and internationally.
The Fashion Advocate: Behind every great salon is a great team. Can you shed some light on your team and their roles within the salon?
VN: We have a stable of young and talented stylists. Andrew is part of the La Biothetique Nouveaux Talents creative team and is our leading stylist and colourist. Sera is our Great Lengths expert and super stylist. The ever efficient SJ takes care of colour and styling at VN, and is renowned for her beautiful blow dry's. Natalie is our premier cutting stylist, specialising in our ’smoothing’ services. Andy has been credited with Australian Fame Team status and regularly works backstage at Australian Fashion Week. A creative genius – he cuts, he colours, he up-styles. The delightful Nathan has returned to Brisbane after working for an exclusive Sydney salon. Nathan loves to colour, cut and style his clients. Monty is our make up specialist, and our up and coming stylist.
The Fashion Advocate: Your salon has styled for numerous runways and designers. Share your backstage experiences.
VN: The Vogue team are regular stylists at Paris, New York and Australian Fashion Week. They have styled/directed the collections of Donna Karen, Alex Perry, Ksubi and Kate Sylvester. This year the Vogue team have been invited back to Paris and New York to style for fashion darling Talbot Runhof.
The Fashion Advocate: What products and brands do you most use in your salon? Share your love of their product with us.
VN: We stock La Biosthetique and Kevin Murphy at our Gasworks salon. We love the luxury of La Biosthetique hair care, and their skin care and makeup range allow us to take care of our client's cosmetic needs. We adore styling with the Kevin Murphy range – it is fun and youthful, yet socially conscious. It's paraben, sulphate and cruelty-free products excites us greatly.
The Fashion Advocate: Any hot Winter hair tips?
VN: Protection is the key to winter styling. Although it has been a mild winter so far, the elements are already harsh enough that we need to prepare our hair to prevent further damage. Hair oils and oil mists are a must. La Biosthetique Luxury Spa Oil is a handbag essential to tame flyways and instantly nourish hair. Kevin Murphy’s Shimmer Shine, packed with gold flakes, adds a touch of glamour.
The Fashion Advocate: What do you love most about your industry?
VN: The opportunity to continue to learn, grow and to push ourselves to be even better hair artists. The most rewarding aspect is the ability to change someone’s life, with a complete make over.
The Fashion Advocate: Finish this sentence: a great hair stylist…
VN: …Always listens to their clients, is attentive to their needs and enhances their natural beauty.
